Samatha Kumbh 2025

16 Feb - day 8

Following the previous day’s mega event (Santhi Kalyana Mahothsavam), today was a day filled with devotion, cheer and fervourOn the seventh day of Samatha Kumbh 2025, two key events – Vasanthothsavam and Theppothsavam brought a lot of fun and frolic to the event  Here is a detailed report of todays events.

Seva kalam at yaga sala

Morning Aradhana was performed including chanting of Thiru Pallandu, Thiruppalliyezhuchchi and Thiruppavai.  Veda, Purana, Itihasa, Stotra vinnapams were doing before Lord. Mangalasasanam to Perumal was done by HH Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji.

Swamiji gave a brief outline of today’s schedule and spoke about the importance of today’s events.

Sriman Nepal Krishnamacharya Swamiji gave details of Agama references while speaking about

Vasanthothsavam and other upcoming events of this Brahmothsavams.

Sevakalam concluded with Nithya Purnahuthi.  Devotees then moved on to the main stage to experience next event, Vasanthothsavam.

Beginning of day’s home at yaga sala.
  • Beginning of day’s home at yaga sala. God is worshipped as antaryami to fire inside Kundam. Here we can see the Rutwik swami depicting the form of God over the fire, showing God’s Sankhu, Chakra, etc.
  • Swamiji performed Sashtanga Pranamam to yaga sala while entering for the first time in the day
  • Morning prayers by Vedic students and teachers
  • Trivia – When we speak to a revered person, we should cover our mouth like this and speak. Do you know that there is an idol in the main temple at Tirumala which shows Sugriva talking like that (by covering his mouth) to Lord Rama (showing Vibheeshana Saranagathi incident)?
  • It is a great feeling to see children take up study of Vedas at a very young age. Here they are chanting Pratassmaraneeyam Slokas.
  • Devotees took part in Theertha goshti in an orderly fashion. While this was going on, stotrams like Aditya Hrudayam were being chanted by students.
  • Even elderly persons in wheel chairs participated in goshti comfortably
  • Sriman Nepal Krishnamacharya Swami explained about the importance of today’s events in Hindi.
  • Nithya Purnahuthi
  • Yaga Sala pradakshina
  • Mangala-Neerajanam
  • Veda vinnapam

Vasanthothsavam / Nishaa Churnothsavam

This event is celebrated as explained in the texts of Sri Pancharatra Agama and Sri Prasna Samhitha. It is similar to Holi (the festival of colours) – that is offered as a service to God.

Lord Rama was given thaila abhyangam (oil shield) before applying sandalwood paste.  Then Lord was showered with water mixed with herbs from a Kalasam.  In second round, saffron paste covering was applied on Thirumeni (body) of Lord. In third round, camphor paste was applied.

All the pastes that were applied on Lord were carefully collected and preserved by Arachaka swamis, so that all the devotees can use it later for sprinkling each other and also get drenched in Lord’s grace – quite literally!

Lord was also showered with milk, curds, honey, etc.  Turmeric paste also was applied and abhishekam offered after that. Various herbal colours were also offered to Lord.

These colours and other ingradients were provided to the devotees who wanted to sprinkle on themselves and each other.

Devotees then moved on to an open place earmarked outside the stage so that they could dance and sprinkle colours and water on each other to their hearts’ content.

  • Lord and parivaram adorning whtie clothes, very appropriate for Vasanthothsavam. Just as well – that the Lord is spotting a black dot on left side of chin as if to ward off any evil eye.
  • Fragrant oils being applied on Lord’s thirumeni. This is called “Thaila abhyanganam”.
  • Herbal colour powders are also ready to be deployed
  • Sandalwood paste is applied in beautiful form
  • Let the fun begin – Lord being drenched with water from Kalasams
  • It looks like the devotees are the ones getting drenched – in Grace of Lord.
  • It is the turn of saffron paste now to hug the Lord.
  • Now the camphor paste gets to shield the Lord in pure white colour.
  • Lord was also offered abhishekam with other liquids – milk, curds, honey, etc.
  • Protection with Turmeric paste and Tulasi garlands
  • Sahasra-dhara for Rama as Lakshmana waits for his turn
  • Different herbal colours being offered
  • Colours being rained on Lord
  • Devotees dancing in celebrations…
  • while Yugandharacharya Swami was singing songs
  • An open place was earmarked outside the stage so that devotees could celebrate while sprinkling colours and waters on each other.
  • Time for fun and frolic

Theppothsavam / Float festival

Theppotsavam is a divine ritual where the Lord and consort get in a small boat like structure (called ‘theppa’) and bless the devotees from there while cruising in a water body (pushkarini). It is also known by the Sanskrit name ‘Plavothsavam’.

During Brahmothsavams of this year, the boat was prepared in the shape of a lotus. Previous year it was in the shape of a huge fish.  In the year preceding that (during first Brahmothsavams), it was in the shape of a Hamsa.

Sriman Nepal Krishnamacharya Swamiji spoke and explained the rationale behind Lotus shaped structure in a beautiful way. Both the Perumal (achyutha-bhanu) and Swami Ramanuja (Ramanuja-diwakara) are the ones which help lotus flower blossom.

HH Devanatha Jeeyar Swamiji spoke and gave another beautiful reason for lotus shape.  God created everything from within a lotus that sprouted from His navel (naabhi-kamalam).

And He pervades its entirely to support it.  Similarly, here Lord is seated inside the lotus as if to remind us about His connection with lotus. Lotus also happens to the place from which Mother Lakshmi emerged from the ocean, at the time of her birth. So Lord likes to stay put in His in-laws house.

HH Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji spoke and compared the pushkarini water with the desires in our hearts (trushna-thoye…). We need to let Perumal stay firm in our hearts, so that He can fulfil our desires and let us lead our lives as service to Him.  Each one of us need to firmly establish the Lord and our Acharya in the lotus that is our own heart.

May Swami Ramanuja bless all of us!

18 Divya Desa Perumals along with their consorts took their places in two circular rows, in the middle of lotus boat
  • A lotus shaped boat was prepared this year for the Theppothsavam
  • Lord Rama of Divya Saketam was seated in the middle of lotus on the top.
  • Bird’s eye-view of the lotus-shaped boat
  • 18 Divya Desa Perumals along with their consorts took their places in two circular rows, in the middle of lotus boat
  • Swami Ramanuja took the place in a small lotus (visible in bottom left corner of picture here) which is attached to the main boat. From there, He could get uninterrupted view of Perumals.
  • Perumals and Swami Ramanuja blessing the devotees who were watching this from the banks of water body.
  • May Swami Ramanuja bless all of us
